Just read this interview with Larry and Sergey, the founders of Google, and was inspired to post a link here. This interview was done when Google had 6 employees! Larry and Sergey both saw Google as being a leader in the search space back in a time when the dot-coms were ramping up to hit the ceiling in the dot-com bubble explosion in March 2000. They continue to drive inovation and are continusioly coming out with new products and improving on their current products. emarketed strives to learn from Lary and Sergey and hope to one day bring emarketed to the eyes of the public as one of the worlds premeir web marketing design firms.
Fixed Black GroundOverlay Problem in Google Earth
Some users were having a problem where my Superoverlays for Google Earth were coming out black. I woke up 2 hours before I usually wake up this morning, and as I was drifting back to sleep it came to me.
I wanted the Superoverlays to be semi-transparent for ski areas where I only have the slope map and not the aerial photo. I set the transparency but then set the color to black, thinking that it shouldn’t matter what color the alpha channel is if it’s just setting transparency. WRONG! Well, it worked fine on my machine, but other machines didn’t like it. So I changed the color to white, and now I have transparency and I get my images too.

Link Building Tips For The Newbie Blogger
Let me ask you a question …
In terms of your online marketing efforts, what have you done to make sure that the search engines recognize you and your target market can find you?
If you have no idea what I’m talking about or, if the answer is “nothing,” then sadly, that’s exactly what you will be receiving when it comes to free web site traffic.
People who do business on the web are realizing that despite the fact that you can purchase traffic though Pay-Per-Clicks advertising, there is a great deal of benefit to attracting the attention of the search engines, from whom you can gain good quality, free, targeted traffic.
If you want targeted traffic from the search engines however, you have to harness the power of link building.
In fact, I’m going to tell you a little story …
Back in November 2007, the PageRank on my blog increased from 5 to 6 and naturally, I was overexcited. A few weeks later though, my blog was back down to a PageRank 5 again.
Now, I know there are all sorts of reasons for the PageRank increasing and then suddenly changing again in a short period of time but I was convinced that there had to have been something I did to lose my PR 6.
Well, after about 4 weeks, I found the problem …
I am registered with Jonathan Leger’s 3 Way Links program and since I was one of the early adopters, I had 250 links pointing to my site just from sites with the 3WayLinks.net system alone and what happened was that I moved my blog and forgot to set up the resources page which displays all of the links and my account was suspended …
250 backlinks wiped in a day!
It’s no wonder my PageRank went down. Google must have thought I was up to no good. I then discovered weeks after this that at the same time, my BlogRush account was suspended because again, I’d forgotten to set up the widget on my blog.
And yes, I expect to receive some comments telling me that losing the incoming links to my blog had nothing to do with anything, but I have tracked the time period and I’m confidently sure that losing 250 back links to my blog wouldn’t go unnoticed by Google for long.
So why are backlinks or incoming links important to your blog or website anyway?
When determining the ranking of your site, the search engines are really only interested in how popular your site is. This popularity is determined by how many sites are linking to you without you linking back to them.
So, by working on good link building you’ll be able to get to the top of the search engine’s list because of the “assumed” popularity of your site. It also means that you can rank highly for a keyword term that doesn’t even appear anywhere on your blog or web site.
If you don’t believe me, go to Google and type in the term “click here.” You’ll notice that Adobe.com is ranked #1 on Google for this search term and yet the term “click here” doesn’t appear anywhere on that page.
Why is this?
Everyone and anyone has a link from their website to the Adobe website explaining that the document the reader or purchaser is about to download is in PDF format and to be able to read the document, they will be required to “click here” and go to Adobe.com to download the free version of their Adobe Reader.
Because of the huge number of links going to Adobe.com, the search engines consider it to be a popular website and has given it more weighting or higher ranking than any other site trying to rank for the term “click here.”
In truth, who would want to rank for the search term “click here” but I use this example to get my point across.
How to you get your links on other people’s websites?
In my view, if you’re a blogger, the first thing you want to do is provide top quality content on your own site and then provide top quality blog comments on other people’s blogs. You can make the task of finding and commenting on other peoplel’s blogs much easier these days by using Comment Kahuna.
You then need to consider submitting good quality articles to articles directories.
You’ve seen sites like Ezinearticles.com and associatedcontent.com and you will notice that on many of the articles, there is a cleverly placed URL at the bottom.
Every article that you post to these article directories is one more link leading back to your site, and what’s more, other people can post the articles they find at the article directories on their blogs or, publish them to their ezine … including yours.
A word of caution when it comes to link building though … avoid using services that promise to broker link exchanges between you and other webmasters. Too often, this can lead to the search engines deciding that you are link spamming and it will penalize you by dropping your ranking which could be more damaging than if you’d done no link building at all.
This is not to say, however, that search engine optimization services are a bad idea. In fact, for many people who do not have the time or the energy to put into link building, outsourcing to an SEO company can be well worth the fees that they will charge in terms of the Return on Investment.
If you do intend outsourcing your search engine marketing though, look for a company that has a good reputation and that come highly recommended. Ask for references, and if necessary, ask to speak to a few of their previous clients. If they’re good, they will be excited to put you in touch with those they’ve achieved good results for … in other words, don’t shy away from being bold and asking. You want to ensure your money is going to be well spent.
Article marketing isn’t the only way to build links back to your website but it’s a great place to start if you have done little or no link building before. Other options include videos, podcasts and, blogging and if you have the inclination to do it, you can approach other webmasters direct and ask them to link back to your site. However, more often than not, they will not do so unless you reciprocate by linking back to them in return which isn’t as effective nowadays.
For more information on reciprocal linking, see my blog post entitled “Is Reciprocal Linking A Thing of The Past?”
One thing is for certain, link building as a means to getting higher search engine rankings isn’t going to go away any time soon so if you want to get found online, it’s time to start building.

Amazon Mechanical Turk
I’m always looking for other methods to earn money on the web and Amazon Mechanical Turk has some capability to earn a little bit or cash, but a better use for it is to get low cost workers to help you with your web promotion. Basically it works like this you sign up for an account and either request to be assigned an Amazon Mechanical Turk for you to perform a hit on. A Hit is basically an action. It can be as simple as providing feedback or it could be a blog review. The reviews are where it gets useful as you can us it to help build up your backlinks to a blog or other website. This is an interesting concept and it works similar to other lancing sites such as the many free lancing sites, except you could have a hundred people performing hits for you all at once. The terms are a little tough, but as long as you stick to the rules you could gain a lot of backlinks in a short amount of time, with just a little investment on your part. You can take a look for yourself at http://www.mturk.com

Making my 3 niche blogs
They say that blogging for profit is really a serious business much like tradition sales and marketing careers. The competition is very stiff so you have to come up with your unique identity that people will like and will keep returning to your site.
To say it in technical jargon, to succeed in blogging for profit, you have to build your niche, drive traffic to your blogs and make people love your blog.
Basically, blogging is writing. And for those new to blogging, the term blog was coined as a short cut to “web log”. In short, it is an online log or diary of what we do or think. But now that blog is in fast proliferation and almost all people have blogs just as they own mobile phones, the term blog to mean “web blog” has slowly lost its essence and diverted into anything that can be written no matter what style of genre.
Now, to be a good writer, one has to write with passion, to write what he know or would like to know, and write from heart.
I do not consider myself a good writer but I am experimenting with niche blogging. One of the niche blogs that i have started is on anything about wedding. I love weddings and I love the way there are prepared. I feel the enthusiasm everytime a bride talks about her gown, or the church and reception venues and all those stuff prepared for weddings. Also, I want to have a niche blog about weddings because I want to be an affiliate marketer for wedding products. Weddings take place throughout the year so there is a vast market possibility for this.
Another niche blog that I have is about sports. I love sports and I keep track of a handful of sporting events like the world series and NBA. Also, if i have had enough traffic and go into an affiliate for sporting products, there will be many opportunities to choose from throughout the year.
I have also made a separate niche blog dedicated solely to extreme sports. I also love extreme sports. They are dangerous and risky but that is where the beauty lies.
Please time time to visit my niche blogs. They are:
http://weddingsinfo.wordpress.com/
http://www.sport-sports.com/com/blogs
http://aboutxsports.wordpress.com/
Or you may click the links on the body of the blogs.
Also, if you can, please click the sponsor links on those blogs. That is where the blogs can earn money too, small they may be.
Oh by the way, sorry i have not yet posted my Google cheque. My Google adsense improving. If the last time, it took me more than a year to earn $134, now i earn a couple of cents everyday.
Good day to all!
More Ads Please!
Ads are in the air this week. Microsoft AdCenter announces the addition of a fourth mainline ad placement; MIVA tells us about its new advertising platform; and Google makes a strategic partnership with NBC Universal to display their TV ads on stations like CNBC, Sci-Fi and Oxygen. Google also takes an official stand on duplicate content, stating that there is no penalty for it, other than the possibility of the search engines picking the wrong content to search. Lastly, AOL pulls it all together by allowing you to aggregate Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! email accounts through their site.
The REAL organic blog SEO list
I just want to say right up front that this list is by no means some “super secret” list. This list is not guaranteed to help you gain more web traffic, nor will I promise it will help you get more blog readers. That being said, this list has helped me tremendously.
First, a little background on where I’m coming from. I started dabbling in Web Marketing about six years ago. At first I was running student travel websites, using mostly affiliate programs and Google Adsense. Back then it was fairly easy to succeed online because comparatively speaking there were far fewer of us working within the realm.
During the first year I probably lost more money than I was bringing in. However, the second year I managed to pull in upper $X,XXX and it got better every year after. Was I getting a ton of traffic? Not really. But, the traffic I was getting was high quality and was easy to convert to buyers, clickers, or subscribers.
It wasn’t until about two years ago that I actually started to break in to some serious traffic on my own sites. When I say serious, I don’t mean 20,000+ visits per day, but I began seeing 150,000 unique visits per month on several of my sites, which was pretty big in my book.
What’s the secret?
Truth is… there is no secret. There is no rocket science, there is no magic wave of the Google wand, and there is no blogging SEO 101 that must be followed. Instead, I used a combination of common sense, online networking, and basic user friendly page edits.
1) Network & Reach Out
We all know about social networking. We should know by now that interacting with other bloggers and building relationships is vital, but do we actually go a step further and actively seek to help other bloggers succeed with no motive of personal reward?
This was key for me. I spent about a year seeking out bloggers who were small, but had great writing talents and who I believed could be superb additions to the highly active side of the blogosphere. Once I identified these bloggers, I worked to enable them to reach a wider audience, I gave them the attention needed to make sure they understood how the new media realm functions, and I viewed their projects and blogs as if they were my own.
Now, I find that the more these bloggers grow, the more I grow simply because they jump at every chance to promote and plug me along with any and all of my projects. And not just the promotion of my work, but also the ability to reach out to them when I have something I need promoted, linked to, or pushed out through the sphere.
Seth Godin once said “ask not what new media can do for you, rather, ask what you can do for it, and how you can immerse yourself into it”. I believe that by helping others succeed, you yourself will succeed with them.
Also vital to networking are the major social networking sites. I find that LinkedIn, while not quite as active on the social front, ranks VERY well in search engines. My LinkedIn profile has always been on the first page of results for my name and it’s a great place to plug yourself, your projects, and your web affiliations.
(By the way, you can request to link up with me using ericjodom@gmail.com.)
The second big one that has helped me is Facebook. Facebook is extremely active, and I’ve been able to grab quite a few subscribers via my feed on my profile, as well as the various Facebook groups that I run.
You can connect up with me on Facebook here.
My Facebook profile isn’t huge by any means. I only have 430 friends at the time of writing this. That being said, I actually know every one of them and have had personal contact with each of my friends at one point or another.
Which brings me to my next item.
2) Groups
I can’t express enough how important it is for us bloggers to be involved in online groups. There are many, MANY places to get plugged into a group, but the most productive for me are Google Groups and Facebook Groups.
I only belong to about ten different Google groups, but they are all very active and a lot gets accomplished. Some are political, some are internet flavored, and some are tech/geek related. But they are all active and consists of people who are interested in grouping together to achieve success online.
Facebook Groups are a different animal, but they can be just as productive. Get connected in with others and be active… it WILL pay off.
3) RSS
This is a no brainer, but for some reason a lot of bloggers do not do enough to make sure the feeds are readily available, easy to subscribe to, and quickly noticeable by the eye.
I have thousands of subscribers across all of my blogs, and they all watch what I do very closely.
4) Update Regularly
Are you not?
5) Basic, general, common sense blog SEO
This doesn’t need to be anything extreme. But you want to make sure you have good title tags, a good permalink structure, and that you link out to other sources often and generously.
For you Wordpress junkies, you can check out this great basic guide to SEO for Wordpress.
Well, that’s about it! This list alone has helped me develop a very strong network of bloggers that have helped me push stories to the front of virtually all social news sites.
I know the list sounds basic and lacking (where are the ones about e-books, directories and video?), but it’s all I’ve ever needed and it works quite well.
What about you?
